Himalayans are a rare breed in Australia and are high maintenance. They require brushing every day, often more than once, and their eyes (and bottoms sometimes) have to be cleaned. They like regular baths and lying around looking glorious and regal. They need commitment from their owners and many Himalayans are abandoned because the daily work required to look after them is too much for most people.

Bealges
The Beagle is a sturdy, hardy little hound dog that is loving and happy to see everyone. Beagles are determined and watchful and require patient, firm handling. They need mental and physical exercise to stay calm. Sociable, brave and intelligent, the beagle is excellent with children and generally good with other dogs. However, they have a hunting instinct and should not be trusted with non-canine pets unless they are socialized with cats and other household animals when they are young.

Australian Author Jeni Mawter loves beagles and has written about a beagle and a gang of friends in a book called ‘Unleashed’. Go to www.jenimawter.com

German Shepherds
The German Shepherd Dog originated in 1899 at Karlsruhe, Germany, and was derived from the old breeds of herding and farm dogs. This dog is hailed as the world’s leading police, guard and military dog.

However, it is also popular as a pet because it is also a loving family companion. And, it is a great show competitor. As a breed it is approachable, direct and fearless with a strong, muscular body. It is highly intelligent and doesn’t forget what it has learnt and will lay down its life for its humans without thinking twice. But it must be kept mentally and physically active if in a family of humans where it’s not required to work.

German Shepherds make great movie stars! The first famous German Shepherd movie star was Strongheart, a star of the silent movie days of the 1920s. Then there was Rin Tin Tin. Their movies played on variations of the boy and his dog theme. More recently an Austrian and then an Austrian-Italian television series, 'Inspector Rex', has caught the imagination of German Shepherd lovers.
